Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional healing practice that has been used for thousands of years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is understood in part through the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”), a vital energy believed to flow throughout the body along pathways known as meridians. Acupuncture practitioners use very fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance and promote overall well-being. At Benefit Acupuncture, each treatment is personalized to your individual needs, with your current concerns, wellness goals, and overall health taken into consideration.

2

How does it work?

Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points are selected based on your individual concerns and treatment goals. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture is used to support the body’s natural flow and balance of Qi. From a modern perspective, research suggests that acupuncture may influence the nervous system and local circulation, as well as the body’s natural pain-modulating processes. During a treatment, some patients notice changes in relaxation, comfort, or other sensations relatively quickly, while others experience changes gradually over the course of several treatments. Every person responds differently, which is why your treatment is tailored to your individual needs.

3

How effective is acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been studied extensively, including through research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). While researchers are still working to fully understand how acupuncture works, current evidence suggests that acupuncture may be helpful for a number of health concerns, particularly certain types of pain. Research has found that acupuncture may help with low-back and neck pain, osteoarthritis-related pain, headaches and migraines, postoperative pain, and some other chronic pain conditions. Evidence also suggests that acupuncture may provide benefits for certain conditions beyond pain, although the strength of the research varies depending on the condition. Everyone responds differently to acupuncture. Your practitioner will consider your individual concerns, health history, and treatment goals when developing a personalized treatment approach. Acupuncture is intended to complement your overall health care and should not be used to delay appropriate medical evaluation or treatment.

4

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine—much thinner than the needles typically used for injections. Most people experience little to no discomfort when the needles are inserted, although you may feel a brief, slight pinch or sensation as the needle is placed. Once the needles are in place, you may notice sensations such as a gentle tingling, warmth, heaviness, or mild soreness. These sensations are generally temporary and can vary from person to person.

5

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices and requires them to be sterile and labeled for single use. At Benefit Acupuncture, we use sterile, single-use needles and follow appropriate safety and hygiene practices throughout every treatment.

6

What is Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of health care that has developed over thousands of years. It views health through the balance and relationship of complementary forces known as **yin and yang**, as well as the flow of "Qi" (pronounced “chee”), a concept traditionally understood as vital energy. Within the TCM framework, yin and yang represent complementary qualities—for example, rest and activity, coolness and warmth, or stillness and movement. Health is traditionally understood as a state of balance, while illness or discomfort may be associated with an imbalance or disruption in the body’s flow of Qi. TCM encompasses several therapeutic approaches, including **acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition, moxibustion, Tui Na (Asian bodywork), and movement practices such as Qi Gong and Tai Chi**. At Benefit Acupuncture, we use the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to develop individualized treatments based on your health concerns, overall well-being, and personal treatment goals.

7

What is allergy?

An allergy occurs when the immune system overreacts to a substance that is normally harmless to most people. These substances, known as "allergens", may include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, certain foods, insect venom, medications, or other environmental substances. The immune system may produce antibodies and release chemicals that lead to an allergic response. Allergic reactions can cause symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itchy or watery eyes, skin irritation, hives, swelling, coughing, wheezing, or digestive symptoms. Reactions can range from mild to severe. Traditional acupuncture may help support the body’s natural regulation of the immune and nervous systems and may help manage some allergy-related symptoms. At Benefit Acupuncture, acupuncture and NAET are offered as complementary approaches and do not replace medical diagnosis, allergy testing, or emergency care.

8

What is Allergy Elimination/ NAET?

NAET (Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques) is a complementary approach developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad that combines concepts from acupuncture, acupressure, kinesiology, and other traditional and alternative health practices. NAET is designed to address sensitivities to substances such as foods and environmental allergens by stimulating specific acupuncture points while the individual is exposed to the substance being addressed. The approach is based on the idea of supporting the body’s ability to respond more appropriately to these substances. At Benefit Acupuncture, NAET is offered as a **complementary wellness approach and is not intended to replace medical allergy testing, diagnosis, or treatment.

9

I’m healthy. Should I still see you?

Absolutely. Acupuncture can be part of a proactive approach to your overall well-being, even when you are feeling healthy. Many patients choose regular acupuncture as a way to support balance, relaxation, and their wellness goals. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, maintaining health and balance is an important part of care—not simply addressing concerns when they arise. Think of it like regular dental cleanings: you don’t have to wait until something hurts to take care of yourself. Regular visits can be tailored to your individual needs and may provide an opportunity to check in, support your overall well-being, and maintain the benefits of your care.
